Cats and Boxes

Do you ever wonder why cats love to snuggle inside a box? Cats are often more excited to nestle in a box than play with a new toy you just got them. They are as curious as George when it comes to almost everything around them, especially if it is new or unfamiliar.

Why the special affinity for boxes? Cats use boxes as their hiding place. They feel comfortable and safe in this contained space. As an ambush predator, they need to look for a confined place while hunting their prey.

According to Purina, cats like boxes because they help to reduce stress and offer a safe zone where a cat can observe and not be seen. This is ideal for cats when their instinct in stressful situations is to run and hide.

Another study conducted by the University of Utrecht was performed on a group of cats. Some were placed in their assigned boxes and some were not. They found that the cats contained inside the box recovered and quickly adapted to their environment. This reaction helps cats to deal with their change and the resulting anxieties.

Aside from being safe, snuggling up in a box makes them feel comfortable and warm, it acts as an insulator for them. As a terrible sleeper, they always look for a comfy space to sleep and boxes are the perfect match.
